Ladies Senior League Final
Glasgow Gaels v Dunedin Connollys
June 3rd 2017
In an extremely fast-paced League decider, the Gaels ladies and Dunedin Connollys went head to head. Both teams former All-Britain Champions at Junior Level and with Connollys experience at Intermediate level (also All-Britain Champions at Intermediate, twice), the Gaels came in underdogs on the day.
Connollys started off quick in their typical fashion, going up 5 points to 0 within the first 15 minutes. The Gaels settled into their game and tallyed a point and a goal in return. It was ball for ball throughout the game with blocks on either end of the pitch. With three goals from the Gaels, they found themselves 4 points up at the break 3-05 to 1-07.
Dunedin came roaring out in the second half, winning the throw up and putting over 3 points in succession to cut the lead to just 1 very quickly. The Gaels kicked into gear, putting in 3 more goals to go 9 points up. The Connollys ladies were not going to be denied and they kept chipping away at the lead with well taken points and long kick passes up the middle of the park. In particular, the combinations of Karen Feeney at half back, up to Christina Newton and Caoilfhion Deeney in the full forward lines was a deadly combination, with quick and clinical finishes once the ball was in hand. The Gaels kept putting the pressure on in the defense to defend the lead, but at full time the All-Britain stalwarts were able to close it out for a draw at full time 6-05 to 3-14.
After full time, Connollys took their chances and tallyed an incredible 4-03 during extra time. Unfortunately the Gaels had an answer of 1-03 that left them with a stinging defeat after what was an incredibly hard fought match. Final score 7-08 to 7-17 (AET).
