Gaels Junior Ladies show promise in their first Scottish League outing

Scotland LGFA Junior League
v Dalriada
6th April 2019
The Gaels Junior Ladies started their new season with a home game at Peterson Park, Yoker on Saturday 6th of April against Dalriada in the first round of the Scottish Junior Ladies League. The two teams have met countless times over the years but Saturday’s match was a little different. The Gaels Ladies have not competed at Junior level since being promoted to Intermediate at the end of the 2016 season after reaching the All Ireland Quarter Final. The club has been expanding at a healthy rate and the re-introduction of a Junior Ladies team has been welcomed within the club as well as being acknowledged as a real asset to Ladies football in Scotland.
The match conditions were perfect and both teams had a strong start, particularly in the midfield with equal possession throughout the first half of the game. Strong passes kept the game flowing well. Dalriada edged in front with a goal just before half time giving them a four point advantage at the 30 minute whistle.
Dalriada’s experience was apparent in the second half as their established forwards put a lot of pressure on the hard working Gael’s backs. Many of their goal attempts were successful. Despite this, in true fashion, the Gaels fought back and secured a few more points towards the end of the second half as well as a few goal attempts that bounced off the cross bar.
Dalriada travelled home victorious after a well deserved win. The Gaels ladies gave a courageous performance with some of their ladies playing their first ever competitive match which is promising for their season ahead.  Also worth noting that 5 of our homegrown players made their adult debut. The future is bright for the red and white!
The next Junior Ladies fixture is the 11th of May when the Gaels travel to Aberdeen to play Dalriada’s home match.
