Gaels and Scotland GAA Host Dublin’s Scoil Ui Chonaill
It was a brilliant day out for all the kids when the Gaels and Scotland GAA hosted Dublin’s Scoil Ui Chonaill on their trip to Glasgow. The visiting club travelled with over 80 kids and 70 adults, taking in the sites of Glasgow and Scotland before making the trip up to Toryglen Regional Football Centre for a blitz tournament with the Gaels and three other Scottish clubs (Dunedin Og, Coatbridge Davits, and Tir Chonaill Harps).
The day began early in Coatbridge when the Scotland girls welcomed Naomh Padraig from Donegal for an U15 challenge match. The Scotland girls battled to the end to end the game in a draw. It was a fantastic result for the girls who were playing against much older and more experienced competition. Four Gaels girls were selected for the Scotland panel: Kayla Gallacher, Rebecca Colraine, Amy McGinley, and Sinead Tait, making her first Scotland debut.
The blitz day continued in Toryglen with an U12 blitz, with 4 Scoil teams playing each of the Scottish clubs. The U14 element saw 2 very strong Scoil teams playing two up and coming teams in the Gaels and Dunedin Og. The Gaels nearly edged out Scoil 2 with a last minute goal, but alas the game ended with the visiting team up by 1 point.
The day ended with an U14 Scoil team taking on the U14 Scotland team. Four Gaels were selected for the Scotland team: Martin Reid, Craig Walker, and both Alexander Friel and Aaron McFadden made their Scotland debuts. Both teams showed great resolve after a long day, putting in a great performance on both sides. The Scotland team was victorious in the challenge match but both of teams earned a great deal of respect from one another.
The day ended with Gaels and Scotland PRO Jennifer Treacy and the Glasgow Gaels Captain’s Francy McMonagle (U10), Kayla Gallacher (U12), and Craig Walker (U14) presenting a traditional Quaich to Scoil’s Management Team in honour of their visit. Thank you very much to all the volunteers, clubs, and families that made this a very memorable day.
