Gaels Munro Challenge
13th August 2017
We caught up with Fundraising Committee member, Annette Lloyd who told us all about the Gaels experience ascending the summit of Ben Lomond:
On the 13th August 2017 a group of 23 men and women from the Glasgow Gaels set out to climb Ben Lomond as part of the club’s newest fundraising initiative “The Gaels Munro Challenge”.
It was a cloudy morning and rain looked inevitable, but this didn’t dampen the collective spirit of the group setting off. The drive from Glasgow was full of tales from the night before and questions of whether mountain rescue would need be to called at some point during the day! We met in Rowardennan car park and set off in a group of red and white.
The beginning of the climb was tough with many steep inclines, but the stories and the craic kept the group going. We took a number of pit stops for water, chocolate and to take in the stunning scenery. The rain arrived eventually but it only quickened the pace of the group taking the Gaels less than 2 hours to reach the top. Some members even chose to run up the summit for some extra championship training!
Unfortunately, the views from the top were minimal with white cloud descending to cover the surrounding landscape. With this came a bitter wind and a shorter than anticipated lunch break. The baked goods and Haribo were met with welcome smiles and cold hands.
We had time for a number of photos and some cheers having reached our goal for the day! The descent proved to be at a much quicker pace with the thoughts of food and drink spurring the group downwards to reach level ground again in 1 hour 45 mins. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, bringing the club closer together and cementing our sociable and inclusive ethos. The well deserved food and drink was rewarded with amazing sunshine on the banks of bonnie Loch Lomond. We are looking forward to conquering our next Munro in 2018 already!
